Full-Stack Developer in Bath
Bath has a strong tech and startup scene – smaller than Bristol, but with serious companies building real products. If you're building something here, you probably need someone who understands early-stage product work: making smart technical decisions when resources are limited, shipping an MVP without overbuilding, and setting up architecture that can grow with you.
I'm a full-stack developer based just outside Bath. I've spent two decades building software for startups and scale-ups – mostly in Laravel and PHP – and I specialise in the kind of backend and full-stack work that technical founders and early teams need: APIs, databases, scaling, and the hard decisions about what to build first.
Why Bath Startups Need Pragmatic Engineering
Bath's tech scene is different from London's – it's smaller, more focused, and often built around genuine product innovation. Startups here need to move fast without burning runway on over- engineered solutions. Product teams at growing companies need someone who can slot in and ship.
I've worked with teams at all these stages. What they have in common is a need for pragmatic engineering: someone who asks why before writing code, who understands that the right answer might be simpler than you think, and who builds things that work now and can evolve later. I wrote about this in building a minimal MVP – the principles apply whether you're a first-time founder or a product team at a scale-up.
If you're in Bath and need a developer who can be in the room for kick-off meetings, visit your office when it matters, or just be on the same timezone for standups, I'm local. I also work remotely with teams across the UK.
What I Work On
My focus is backend and full-stack development – the parts of your product that handle data, integrations, and business logic. For most new projects, I use Laravel, which is fast to build with, easy to maintain, and scales well. For existing Symfony projects or enterprise PHP codebases, I can work with what you have.
- MVPs and new products – shipping something usable quickly, without technical debt that slows you down later
- APIs and integrations – clean REST or GraphQL APIs, third-party integrations, data pipelines
- Scaling and performance – when your app slows down or your database struggles, I can help diagnose and fix it
- Technical direction – for teams without a CTO or tech lead, I can help you make architecture decisions
I've written about some of this on the blog: database design for startups, API design, and scaling Laravel backends.
